From Design to Construction: Can Robots Build Your Design Autonomously?

On May 18th , our researcher Shermin Sherkat from the Chair of Computing in Architecture at the Institute of Computational Design and Construction (ICD/CA) delivered an online lecture at the Universität Innsbruck as part of the "Struktur und computerbasierte Gestaltung" lecture series.

The lecture, "From Design to Construction: Can Robots Build Your Design Autonomously? – Automating Robotic Task and Motion Planning with AI and Software Engineering", explored how advanced AI methods, particularly Behavior Trees, can support the automation of robotic construction directly from building designs.

The presentation addressed technical challenges that often limit the adoption of AI-driven tools in practice and demonstrated how software engineering principles can help overcome these barriers, making AI tools more accessible, reliable, and easier to apply in real-world construction workflows. The talk further highlighted approaches for automating robotic task and motion planning, contributing to more seamless design-to-construction processes.
