ICD Research Associate Nils Opgenorth presented his ongoing research at the 31st Project Days of Building Research hosted by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) in Bonn. His presentation, titled “Lights-Off On-Site Timber Construction,” outlined current developments toward automated construction processes in timber architecture.
The research focuses on the development of core technologies for automated on-site timber construction, with particular emphasis on the robotic positioning, joining, and gluing of large-scale timber elements.
To achieve this, the project investigates the use of a multi-scalar robotic team, augmenting conventional construction machinery with digital control systems and innovative, distributed clamping robots. The integrated system aims to increase precision and efficiency on site while reducing manual labor.
