During June 28th and July 6th ICD researchers Yerong Huang, Sujie Park, and Ruxin Xie will lead a workshop at DigitalFUTURES2026, hosted by Tongji University in Shanghai, China.
The workshop invites participants to rethink architectural design through 4D printing, a fabrication approach in which material systems are programmed to transform over time in response to environmental stimuli. Participants will develop small-scale experiments to investigate the relationships between geometry, material composition, environmental conditions, and the shape transformation of printed structures. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained practical experience in designing and fabricating responsive, shape-morphing 4D-printed prototypes, while developing customised, material-driven fabrication workflows. Through the concept of machine–material co-agency, the workshop encourages participants to explore how human creativity, digital fabrication, and programmable matter can be integrated to reshape architectural imagination and practice.
