DIY PPE Face Shield

Face shield by folding

Due to the current demand for personal protective equipment, researchers at the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) offer a fabrication manual for PPE face shields that can be produced using everyday office supplies, in just a few seconds. The design of the face shield employs origami principles to create depth and stiffness from sheet material, eliminating the need for 3D-printing, laser cutting, or other specialized manufacturing techniques. The face shield can be made by folding an A4 transparent plastic sheet on two curved fold lines, finished by adding holes for attaching the rubber band and optional stapling on the corners for added stability. Any individual with access to basic office supplies can use this open-source design to produce protective face shields and help their local communities. Simply download the folding pattern and follow the instructions to make your own Face Shield by Folding!
