The 2013 ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion is based on biomimetic investigations of the fiber-based lightweight, natural structures of beetle elytra with biologist from University of Tuebingen and supported by micro computer tomography conducted at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Flying beetle elytra evolved into a lightweight structural system through the need for structural rigidity and weight reduction. The versatility of the system is based on the locally differentiated material organization of a double-layered shell structure, coupled by integrated fiber columns (trabeculae). The goal of this research is to develop computational design strategies and robotic fabrication methods that transfer the functional and structural principles of the fibrous morphology of beetle elytra into a lightweight fiber composite architectural system. You can also follow the development of the pavilion on FACEBOOK.
