Solar Gate: Bioinspired, weather-responsive, adaptive shading

July 9, 2025 /

Lecture
Schwabenlandhalle Fellbach

On July 9, 2025, Ekin Sila Sahin will present the Solar Gate project at the "Plan B – Bioeconomy for Industrial and Urban Areas in Baden-Württemberg" event, hosted by Umwelttechnik BW at the Schwabenlandhalle Fellbach.

The event will bring together representatives from politics, business, and research to further advance the bioeconomy in Baden-Württemberg. As part of the programme, Ekin will introduce the Solar Gate – a weather-responsive shading system installed on the south-facing skylight of the livMatS Biomimetic Shell. Inspired by pine cones, the Solar Gate adapts to humidity and temperature without requiring any electrical energy and represents the first architectural-scale application of 4D-printing technology.

Ekin will share insights into the interdisciplinary research process behind the project, from bioinspired design to full-scale fabrication, and outline future directions for applying the technology to larger facade systems and diverse climate conditions.

Date: 9th July 2025

Event:  9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Venue: Schwabenlandhalle Fellbach, Guntram-Palm-Platz 1, 70734 Fellbach
