InterReas: Interoperability and AI Reasoning for Building Design and Fabrication

Enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration in building design and fabrication through knowledge graphs and symbolic AI.

InterReas aims to enhance collaboration across disciplines in building design and robotic fabrication by utilizing knowledge graphs. These graphs integrate and represent data from various domains, improving the early identification of design constraints and minimizing costly changes and inefficiencies.

The project involves developing a dedicated ontology for timber buildings and a robotic fabrication ontology, interconnected through mappings. A software framework leveraging symbolic AI methods validates compliance with fabrication constraints and regulations, such as fire safety and spacing requirements, promoting more efficient and sustainable construction processes while minimizing waste and CO₂ emissions.

In collaboration with industry partner GROPYUS, the project investigates the role of knowledge graphs in improving data discoverability and interoperability. Through qualitative and quantitative evaluations, the effectiveness and usability of the developed ontologies and software framework will be assessed. All project outcomes will be made open-source to address critical interoperability challenges within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.
