MODULAR DATA ARCHITECTURE FOR PREPARATION, ANNOTATION AND EXCHANGE FOR CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

This project is part of the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2120 "IntCDC", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

This project supports co-design by addressing the interoperability challenge posed by heterogeneous computational workflows in interdisciplinary building projects. This interoperability challenge arises from monolithic software architectures in the architecture, engineering and construction industry that bundle various functions together but are incompatible with other software, for example building information modelling software. To explore and evaluate an alternative software architecture, this project will develop a suite of microservices (i.e., composable functions) that not only abstract the dataflows of architectural design processes, but also allow reciprocal feedback by incorporating down-stream data from prefabrication and assembly, thus enabling more seamless co-design. The work programme will assess data exchange requirements in IntCDC with respect to multi-storey timber construction, design a microservice-based architecture encompassing abstracted manipulations and incorporating annotations that support these data exchanges, develop and implement this architecture and evaluate it quantitatively and qualitatively.
