Semantic Building: Advancing Geometric Data Validation and Reasoning With Semantic Web Technologies in Architecture

Semantic Web technologies offer significant potential for enhancing data interoperability and linking various disciplines within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. However, challenges remain, particularly in the representation of 3D geometries, which are vital for the sector's effective operation. In the AEC domain, precise geometric and geospatial data are crucial not only for determining the relative and absolute positioning of elements but also for accurately representing these elements and querying them effectively. Consequently, developing methods for modeling complex geometries in computer graphics and computer-aided design presents a significant challenge.

To address these challenges, the "Semantic Buildings" project aims to enhance the representation and reasoning of AEC geometric data within the Semantic Web. The project will begin with a comprehensive analysis of the current state of geometric data representation and manipulation within the Semantic Web, as well as an examination of the existing libraries of computational geometry algorithms used in the AEC industry.

Next, the project will focus on developing and refining a method for geometric representation that is compatible with Semantic Web technologies, followed by the creation of a reasoning and validation approach for geometric data. These methods will be implemented to establish a robust framework capable of handling 3D geometric information alongside semantic information represented using Semantic Web languages such as RDF (Resource Description Framework). Finally, the system will be evaluated and analyzed using real-world data provided by GROPYUS, the industry partner, to validate its effectiveness and practical application.
